Around and about in Moscow…

Well, there was not much time to write up my blog yesterday.  We are only in Moscow for two and a half days, and it is DEFINITELY not enough time to see this great city.  It’s actually a bit crazy here right now as the World Cup (soccer)  is taking place and the streets are full of fans from all over the world.  Unfortunately, St Basil’s Cathedral was closed off yesterday, plus the area all around it, for a FIFA event, so I only got one not-very-good picture, and will have to get one of our tour buddies — who were clever enough to go the day before — to share their photos with me later.

Apologies, by the way, if you see some of my photos sideways or upside down (thanks for letting me know, JD!), as it always looks okay for me.  I am going for a little more WordPress training when I am back, and will be sure to ask about this.  In the meantime, hope no-one gets a neck strain…. ?

One big highlight yesterday was a walking tour of the Kremlin.  We two (and just about everybody on the tour) always thought the Kremlin was maybe one or two buildings, but it turned out to be an actual walled city, with many buildings.  Here is one of the several cathedrals inside the Kremlin, check out the amazing golden onion domes.

We have also visited several of the famous Metro stations here in Moscow, and they really are quite spectacular.  Like temples!  My iPhone pictures don’t do them justice, but I will post one anyway, and hope it gives you a flavour.

And to end my blog today, I will share a photo of a monument, in the Novodevichy Convent Cemetery.  It’s a bit dark as it was raining, but I hope it is clear enough for you to see that the gentleman whose tomb this is is on the telephone!  He was in military communications, and this is the reason for this somewhat unusual monument.

  1. Just one sideways pic today – the statue guy on the phone. Interesting that they show him on the phone, I guess it’s like other military guys on their horses – the phone was his weapon. Your posts are great, keep it up.

  2. Yes, this blog is delightful! But you know, I think if everyone right-clicks the photos and chooses “View Image,” they appear right-side up. It works on my computers anyway.

  3. I completely forgot that Moscow Metro stations are amazing – thank you for the reminder! Funny how I took it for granted…If you, guys, ever choose to go back, I remember from my childhood about this tour called Золотоe Кольцo (Golden Ring), which I never got a chance to go on. I think you would love it – check it out!
Also if that military communications man was anything like Brad, no surprise there about the telephone! 🙂

  4. We all here are wondering if the reason for you not updating your blog today is because you and Mr. M. are extremely busy celebrating the crazy soccer win with all the wild Russian fans and rivers of wodka 😉
